From platinum-rich asteroids to Helium-3 on the Moon — space mining was once hailed as the next great frontier. But today, the buzz has faded. What happened? What has changed? And most importantly, where do we stand now?
We’re proud to share that our CEO, Dr. Jakub Ciążela, is featured in the newly released documentary “Space Mining. A Difficult Beginning”, produced by the Nauka. To Lubię Foundation, under the creative direction of renowned science communicator Tomasz Rożek. The production team also included Krzysztof Kurdyła, Tomasz Sokołowski, and Kaja Wojutycka.
A Realistic Look at the Future of Space Mining
Premiered on May 31, 2025, simultaneously in Warsaw and Katowice, the documentary brings together leading Polish voices in planetary exploration, engineering, and law to provide an honest, grounded assessment of the prospects and challenges of mining beyond Earth.
Alongside Dr. Jakub Ciążela, the film features:
- Dr. Mariusz T. Kłoda, a specialist in space law
- Prof. Tadeusz Uhl, Head of the Space Technology Center at AGH University of Kraków
Together, they offer critical insights into:
- Why early promises around space mining faded
- What technologies are still missing
- How international space law is struggling to keep up
- And whether Poland can play a meaningful role in this global endeavor
Legal and Ethical Dilemmas
One of the documentary’s most compelling themes is the legal grey area surrounding space resources.
Who owns materials extracted from celestial bodies? Could asteroid or lunar mining spark geopolitical tensions? These are no longer abstract questions — they’re urgent, and unresolved.
A Growing Legacy of Science Communication
This is the second large-scale production from the Nauka. To Lubię Foundation, following the success of “Secrets Hidden in CERN”, which reached nearly half a million viewers and was nominated for “Internet Video of the Year” by Wirtualnemedia.pl.
📍Part of the filming took place at the Coal Mining Museum in Zabrze, a fitting location that highlights both our mining heritage and our future ambitions beyond Earth. We thank the museum for their generous support.
