Exploring the Depths of the Pacific: Mirores CEO Joins Scientific Expedition
We are excited to share that Jakub Ciążela, CEO of Mirores.eu, recently participated in an extraordinary deep-sea scientific expedition in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone aboard the research vessel Anuanua Moana! This mission was a significant step in advancing sustainable resource exploration and understanding deep-sea ecosystems.
Mission Overview
- Expedition Route: Departed from San Diego, USA, on December 26, 2024, and concluded in Papeete, French Polynesia, on January 26, 2025.
- Objective: Conduct research in the IOM exploration area (Block H22) under the International Seabed Authority (ISA) contract, focusing on polymetallic nodule deposits and deep-sea habitat assessments.
Scientific Activities & Research Goals
During the month-long expedition, the team conducted:
- Geological research to analyze polymetallic nodule distribution and composition.
- Sediment and nodule collection using box corers and multi-corers.
- High-resolution bathymetric surveys to map the seabed.
- Over 80 hours of ROV footage capturing deep-sea environments.
- Geotechnical instrument calibration for precise sediment and nodule analysis.
- Processing of geological and biological samples for further study.
Mission Highlights & Unique Moments
Beyond rigorous research, the team experienced unforgettable moments:
- Double New Year’s celebration as the vessel crossed time zones.
- Freshly caught wahoo fish prepared by the crew during transit.
- Traditional „Crossing the Line” ceremony for first-time equator crossers.
Final Stop: Moorea Island, French Polynesia
The expedition concluded with a visit to the CRIOBE research station on Moorea Island, where biological samples will undergo further analysis.
Despite challenging Pacific storms and a demanding research schedule, the mission was a resounding success—a vital contribution to responsible deep-sea exploration and sustainable resource management.
