What do we really know about Mars, and why does it remain our best candidate for a second home? These were the central questions during Space Day (Dzień Kosmiczny) at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS), where MIRORES team member Dr. Natalia Zalewska (CBK PAN) shared her expertise on the mysteries of the Red Planet.
In a special segment of „Kącik kosmiczny” for Radio Nowy Świat, Dr. Zalewska joined host Klaudia Kowalczyk to discuss the current state of Martian research and the challenges facing future explorers.
The most viable candidate
The discussion delved into why Mars continues to dominate the conversation regarding human settlement beyond Earth. Unlike other celestial bodies, Mars offers a day-night cycle similar to our own and evidence of past water, making the evaluation of its habitability a top priority for global space agencies.
Bridging the knowledge gap
Despite decades of satellite observations and rover missions, significant „knowledge gaps” remain. Dr. Zalewska highlighted that understanding the Martian environment, specifically its complex planetary geology, is essential before the first human footprint can be made.
At MIRORES, we believe that scientific outreach is vital. By bridging the gap between complex geological data and public interest, we help prepare society for an interdisciplinary future among the stars.
